Ireland’s Call The Musical

Have you ever watched something thinking you know what it is going to be about and ended up being completely wrong?  Last weekend I went to the Central Hall Theatre in Chatham to see Ireland’s Call, thinking it was a love story set in Ireland.  Two of my favourite musicals were set in Ireland (The Beautiful Game and Once) and I was really looking forward to seeing Ireland’s Call, after all who doesn’t like a bit of romance set to Irish music?  Well I was right about the love story but I was not expecting so much Irish music or dancing.

Ireland’s Call – A love story told through irish music and irish dancing

My favourite type of plays/musicals are those which are ‘real life’ and this musical is no exception as it tells the story or how the Irish left their beloved homeland to find fortune overseas

The story is set in New Ross, Co Wexford where a young man Sean Dempsey meets his love Cora McGowen.  Within five minutes of the show opening the Irish sing and dancing has started, and I did at first, think to myself ‘where is this going – is it a musical or is it just a night of Irish song and Dance?’

However, the story soon begins unfold through Ged Graham’s narration.  Ged plays three brothers, one each in Ireland, London and New York and throughout the story is pulled together by  Ged’s singing and the odd comical moment.

When I go to a musical, I like to hear the story told through song and this is no exception.  Some of the songs are quite moving such as the song ‘I Loved her First’ from the wedding scene.

I would also like to mention the Irish dancing which gave an added dimension to the story.  The dancers are so energetic and colourful and compliment the musical in every way possible.

This musical has opened up my eyes to the world of Irish music and dancing and I now have a yearning to go to Ireland to experience more.

Ireland’s call is a beautiful love story told through Irish music and Irish dance and if you get the chance to see it you will not be disappointed.  You can check out their website here

Would I go and see the musical again – most definitely!
